Clay For Kids Origin

Mission statement:

Make Clay for Kids the most successful children's pottery program in Canada

Clay for Kids has been in business since 1981 and offers a 90 minute pottery program that involves a pottery wheel demonstration and discussion about clay. The discussion includes where clay comes from, what colors are found, how it changes, who uses it, and how and why it is fired. We then begin the instructions for the project that has been requested and the students would begin making their project. There are over 55 art and curriculum projects that we offer and a unique method of teaching that ensures all students a successful project. After the class, the Clay for Kids instructor will take all the finished projects back to their studio. The work will be fired and returned within 21 days with a "tips sheet" which provides teachers with a variety of choices to paint and finish the project.

In 2007-08 CfKC taught 1500 clay classes to elementary schools for public, separate, private and charter schools. We teach many birthday parties, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides groups all year long. The Calgary Autism Association hired us for classes with various aged children and young adults. The Dr. Gordon Townsend school at the Children's Hospital, the Salvation Army's Children's Village, numerous of senior groups, and hearing impaired classes at Queen Elizabeth school have all required the services of Clay for Kids. One of the highlights of my career was last summer. Two classes of children and young adults for the Canadian Institute of the Blind were taught and it was a fabulous experience. We provide our services to many Out-of-School Cares, day camps and day cares during the summer.

In august 2008, our first Clay for Kids Studio was build where we welcome adults and children for classes, camps and parties of all kind.

There are several reasons Clay for Kids has been so successful over the years. We travel to all the school classes; there is no transport worry, lengthily insurance forms to fill out or bussing expense. Also, I have designed and manufactured a "one of a kind" pottery wheel. This wheel has been CSA approved and is taken to every class for the demonstration. The women who instruct Clay for Kids classes have been thoroughly trained in all aspects of making and firing the projects and working with a wide variety of ages in the classroom. All instructors have had a police security clearance. There are Clay for Kids offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge. We are hoping to open a branch in Red Deer and then approach the British Columbia market by 2009.
